STELLAR STORIES: Dad's Camera

Dad's Camera Written by Ross Watkins Illustrated by Liz Anelli Candlewick Press, 2018. Picture book. Grief can be difficult to explain to children. “Dad’s Camera” by Ross Watkins is a realistic portrayal of how painful it can be to watch a loved one slip away slowly. The narrator deals with watching their father become less and less like himself, and the uncharted territory of loss. All this is told through the father’s purchase of an old film camera which he uses to take pictures of everyday objects, much to the confusion of his family. The subject matter is heavy in this book, but the beautifully done illustrations feel nostalgic and warm, which helps remind the reader that through the confusion and grief, this is a family filled with a lot of love. The writing might be a little too abstract for very young readers, but for older readers, or kids who are reading with an adult, the story should make sense. This book would be an excellent jumping of point for questions abou

STELLAR STORIES: Bunny in the Middle

Bunny in the Middle By Anika A. Denise Illustrated by Christopher Denise Henry Holt and Company, 2019. Picture Book. Bunny is the middle bunny—not the oldest sibling nor the youngest sibling. That means a lot of things. It means that some things are too big for Bunny and somethings are too small for Bunny. It means hand-me-downs and leading and following (and sometimes trying to be on your own). This is a sweet story about three bunny siblings and how the middle one is just as important as the older and younger bunnies. This is a stellar story to show the middle bunnies just how important they all are.

STELLAR STORIES: Rocket to the Moon

Rocket to the Moon By Don Brown Amulet Books, 2019. Graphic nonfiction. In 1969 Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first humans to man a mission to the moon. This historic moment was the culmination of years of research, test launches, and scientific exploration. Rather than focusing only on Armstrong, Aldrin, and Michael Collins, this graphic novel nonfiction turns to the all the events leading up to the first moonwalk and how centuries of preparation were necessary to make history. There are dozens of books about the moon landing - especially as we are celebrating the 50th anniversary this week - but this book stands out by not regurgitating the same well-known bullet points of the mission. Impeccably researched and beautifully illustrated this is an excellent volume for any budding astronauts - even those already familiar with the moon landing.

DISPLAY: Greek Mythology

Zeus By Russell Roberts The ancient Greeks worshiped a complex group of deities, weaving their characters into timeless tales of love, heroism, and intrigue. Plays, poems, paintings, and sculptures commemorating these tales have survived for centuries. Even as world religions and scientific knowledge have evolved, bringing with them new beliefs and understanding of the world, the ancient Greek tales continue to provide a basic foundation for Western thought and sharp insight to the human psyche. Although these stories took place thousands of years ago, they still impact us today. The personality and characteristics of Zeus can often be seen in tales that modern writers and filmmakers weave. The name Zeus still stands for the ultimate in power and authority, which is why it graces modern companies and their products. A study of the starry night sky reveals constellations named after the twin sons of Zeus. Indeed, if mighty Zeus were to look down at the earth today from his lofty O

STELLAR STORIES: Duel at Araluen

Duel at Araluen  By John Flanagan Philomel Books, 2019. 314 pages. This is the third book in the Royal Ranger’s series (the sequel series to the Ranger’s Apprentice that starts with The Ruins of Gorlan ). In this book readers will learn what happens after the cliff-hanger of book two (where Maddie’s Mom and Dad are both sieged and under attack in two different places). Maddie has to take all that she has learned from Will Treaty and figure out how to save the day (and her parents and her country). This is a great story (albeit one that must be read after the others in the series) to show just how resourceful these rangers—and Maddie—are. Well told.

STELLAR STORIES: How to Be on the Moon

How to Be on the Moon Written and Illustrated by Viviane Schwarz Candlewick Press, 2019. Picture Book.        "Let's go to the moon!" said Anna.        "But that's out in space," said Crocodile. "Space is dark, and there's nobody there, and the moon is really very far away. It will be almost impossible."        "I like that," said Anna. "Let's go!" In anticipation of the fiftieth anniversary of Apollo 11's moon landing, here's a dynamic little picture book about two friends embarking on their own outer space journey. What special skills do they need? (Math and patience.) How should they prepare? (Make sandwiches, build a rocket, and pack the travel games.) And what will the moon be like when they get there? I enjoyed the text of this picture book as much as any I've read this year. The charming banter between bold Anna and cautious Crocodile reminds me of A. A. Milne's dialogue between C

STELLAR STORIES: The Night Flower

The Night Flower By Lara Hawthorne Big Picture Press, 2019. Informational, pp. 32 The flower of the saguaro cactus is a little more interesting than other flowers. It blooms only once a year, and when it does, the animals take notice. The event is so exciting and unique that even the more unusual pollinators come out to celebrate the feast—bats and mice, for example. Because the cactus only blooms once, the animals are careful not to miss it. Hawthorne’s beautifully rendered illustrations of the saguaro cactus and the desert night life accompany enjoyable rhyming text, all of which is there to inform young readers about the unique ecosystems of deserts. The rhyming couplets add a level of fun to the basic info given about the saguaro cactus flowers that makes the information easy to digest and remember. And the pictures breathe life into the dark world of the desert at night, which might surprise people who aren’t familiar with that climate. The story of the saguaro cactus flow
