SofĆa Acosta Makes a Scene

SofĆa Acosta Makes a Scene  By Emma Otheguy  Alfred A. Knopf, 2022. 281 p.  SofĆa is the middle child in a ballet family. Her parents were ballet dancers that came to the United States to dance, and decided to not return to Cuba. SofĆa’s older sister is a ballet protĆ©gĆ©. Her younger brother is a great dancer as well. And SofĆa…well…she sometimes can happen to dance to the rhythm. (Though she doesn’t really understand what the rhythm is no matter how much she practices with her family.) SofĆa would rather be sewing or creating miniature scenes of the Nutcracker in a shoebox than dance. But if she doesn’t dance well, would she still fit into her family? Would there still be a place for her? This book is a fantastic look at what makes a family—and what makes a person within a family special. Throw in some friend drama, examples of Cuban American discrimination, and learning to trust her voice to speak up (about friends, family, and what she believes in), and this is one great choice for

Just Right Jillian

Just Right Jillian   By Nicole D. Collier  Illustrations by Kitt Thomas  Versify, an imprint of HarperCollins, 2022. 215 p.  Jillian is learning to be herself—in a world where she would often rather be shy and not stand out. But a promise to her grandmother who had passed away means that Jillian will to try to compete in the mind bender competition at her elementary school. Jillian knows she is smart, but she doesn’t know how she can bring attention to herself by competing and answering the questions—unwanted attention makes her freeze. This is a good book to show kids that they can be themselves, even when it might seem scary. Also, the way that Jillian is a friend to others (both those who she was already friends with and those that seemed to be her enemies) shows that kindness is just as important as being smart. This is a great edition to the realistic fiction books on figuring out who you are.

Sydney & Taylor and the Great Friend Expedition

This book is an easier read but with a few bigger words the help Intermediate readers learn something new. This book would also be a great tool to help kids learn how to make friends. Although the pair of friendly animals are eager to meet people, it takes a little  work and proves to be a bit discouraging, but in the end, friends are easy to find when you care about others.

Books to Read...When You Want to Laugh

Everyone loves a good laugh. And what better way to laugh than to read a silly, funny story? Here are five of my very favorite books for ages 8-11 that can always produce a smile and laugh from me. Fortunately, the Milk By Neil Gaiman Illustrated by Skottie Young New York, NY : Harper, an imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers, 2013. Fiction. This book is nonsensical fun the whole way through! I absolutely loved how it was about everything and yet nothing. Everything in the sense that you get volcano gods, pirates, aliens, and dinosaur inventors all in the same story, and nothing in the sense that it is simply about a father getting the milk for his children's breakfast cereal. This is a funny, fast-paced book that will make a terrific read-aloud for anyone just wanting a nonsensical ride in a Floaty-Ball-Person-Carrier.   Wayside School: Beneath the Cloud of Doom By Louis Sachar Illustrated by Tim Heitz  New York, NY : Harper, an imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers, 2020. Books That Take You There: France

One of my best friends is going to France this month.  I'm not bitter.  Honestly, I'm not.  I AM, however, very jealous.  I was first introduced to France when I chose French as my foreign language credit in junior high and into high school and where, with the best of intentions, I butchered that beautiful language on the daily.  When asked for the yearbook why I chose French, I was quoted as saying, "Because it's the language of love and I'm ready for love!"  Clearly I am destined to go there--for the love, to finally get good at French, and oh, did I mention the food?  For that, too!   Sadly, destiny won't find me there anytime soon.  For those of us who are staying home, here are a few fabulous books with French flair.   The Last Musketeer By Stuart Gibbs Harper Collins, 2018. Fiction. In Paris with his parents to sell family heirlooms, fourteen-year-old Greg Rich suddenly finds himself four hundred years in the past, and is aided by boys who will one d

If You Like...Fairy Tale Retellings

Some of my favorite books are fairy tales. I requested them as a child and they are still my book of choice. I also really enjoy a good fairy tale retelling.
