This summer, I attended the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah, and had a fabulous time! I tried to prepare by reading the shortened versions of the plays in Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb. Watching the plays under the stars, feeling the warm summer air in the Engelstad Theater—a re-creation of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London—was magical. The outstanding performances transported me through space and time and into the imaginative world of William Shakespeare. Here are five books that will introduce young readers to the Bard. Every month we have two book clubs for kids here at the Provo City Library! These book clubs are just for kids ages 9-12 and a caregiver. The Bear and the Seed By Poonam Mistry Somerville, Massachusetts : Candlewick Studio, an imprint of Candlewick Press, 2026. Picture book.  When the once beautiful forest that is bear's home begins to disappear, bear is filled with sadness. The plants are disappearing, the trees are being cut down, the animals are leaving. However, one day, when Bear finds a seed, he channels his grief into protecting and caring for the seed as he learns and waits patiently for it to grow.   As a librarian who is suppposed to be above such things, I'm ashamed to admit that I judged this book by it's cover, but also glad that I did because The Bear and the Seed  is filled to the brim with intricate, beautifully unique illustrations, which are really the highlight of the book. I had a great time perusing the illustrations, and think it would make a lovely lap read with caretaker and child exploring and enjoying the illustrations together. He ends up finding a job at a dragon sanctuary. Not only must Olly come to grips that dragons are real, he also must save Dr. Lady (the one who runs the dragon sanctuary) and all the dragons before mysterious forces try to destroy all the dragons.
