If You Like... Books About Winter

It is getting to be the time of the year when snowflakes are on their way and warm, cozy scarves are going to become part of getting ready to go outside. Here are five books that showcase winter and the colder weather that is coming. Enjoy!

New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, 2023. Picture Book.

In this sweet tale a young duckling talks to Wuddles the sheep about his plan. The duckling is sure that he will be cold and wants to borrow some wool to make a scarf…only then he realizes that all the other animals may be cold too. With a lot of wool gathering, soon Wuddles is left in the cold. And the duckling must figure out what to do to help his friend that helped everyone else get ready for winter.

A brother and a sister say “hello” to all the various things that are autumn such as leaves and wind and migrating birds. Then they start to say “hello” to other things that signal a change in the weather like snow or icicles or frost. This is a great book to showcase how things can gradually change until there is a new season.

This is one of my all-time favorite books about a kid building a snowman! A child decides they are going to build a snowman. It is going to be the greatest snowman of all time. But first the child must get ready to go outside. And then there are the plans he has to follow as to how to build the snowman. And then there is the execution (which isn’t always perfect). But this story has a perfect ending full of confidence that the kid has in his creation. Such fun!

This is a book that is perfect to read to young toddlers that want few words and lots of families in bright illustrations doing fun things on a page. This family goes outside and does all sorts of winter things like building a snowman or ice skating. And with the few words on the page, toddlers will be able to sit still and see just what is happening before they reach for the next page-turn. A great introduction for the youngest readers to winter.

New York: Holiday House, 2023. Picture Book.

In this story, a young mouse named Hubert Cumberbun loves to go to the library. Then one day as he is heading home, he gets caught in a storm. Due to the weather, Hubert decides to take a shortcut through the hollow to get home faster. And what follows is a winter adventure unlike any other. Young readers who love adventure and the magic that comes when seeing the world full of snow will enjoy this tale.
