Review: Nothing Else But Miracles

New York: Margaret Ferguson Books, Holiday House, 2023. 278 pages.

Dory Byrne lives in the Lower East Side in New York City during WWII. Her mom previously passed away and her pop is off fighting in the war. Older brother Fish (17) is watching Dory and younger brother Pike while all three of them go to school. Pop always says that the “neighborhood will give you what you need.” So, when a new landlord threatens the home they live in, Dory looks to the neighborhood to see how it can keep them safe.

This is a great historical fiction story with loads of details about New York City, the Lower East Side, the Statue of Liberty, and even Coney Island. Dory is a character with a lot of spunk and readers will learn with her as she works through growing up and dealing with all the feelings that come with various stressful situations. Fans of middle grade historical fiction will love Dory’s story.

Alice with a Why By Anna James New York: Penguin, 2026. Fiction. 240 pgs. In 1919, in the aftermath of the first World War, Alyce is living with her grandmother in the English countryside. Her grandmother, also named Alice, tells Alyce (with a y) stories from her childhood adventures in a wonderful land filled with white rabbits and mad hatters. Alyce doesn't really believe the silly stories, she just misses her father who was killed in the war. One day, Alyce receives a mysterious invitation to tea, and subsequently falls into a pond where she is transported to Wonderland. Her grandmother, of course, is that Alice. Alyce is prompted by the Mad Hatter, Dormouse, and March Hare to seek out the Time Being and put an end to the war between the Sun King and the Queen of the Moon. Five Faves: Funny Animal Picture Books

Here is the thing, I have a kid that loves animals. And I have another kid who really likes funny books. So when it comes to reading books if I can get a book that is funny and has animals in it, there is a chance that I can get both of my kids to listen to that book.
