Old Friends
By Margaret Aitken
Illustrated by Lenny Wen
New York: Feiwel and Friends, 2022. Picture Book.
Marjorie is an old soul who would rather spend time knitting, gardening and baking than playing the games other children her age are interested in. Now that her grandmother is gone, Marjorie is at a loss about whom she will do these activities with, until she sees an advertisement at the community center for a Senior Citizen Friends Group that includes all of her favorite activities. The only problem is, Marjorie is not a senior citizen. Disguise hijinks ensue as Marjorie tries to sneak into the group.
This delightful picture book shows that there is more that connects the generations than one might think. Marjorie’s disguise techniques will amuse readers. There is also an overarching theme of grief and lost loved ones as Marjorie misses her grandmother. Her new intergenerational friendships show that people of any age can learn from each other. The close of the book also reveals that Marjorie may not be as different from others her own age as she initially thought.
