Salma and her mother are in Vancouver where they moved after leaving Syria. Salma is worried about her mother—who hasn’t really smiled since they left their father behind. One day while talking Nancy at the Welcome Center Salma gets an idea of how she might be able to help her mother smile—she can make a Syrian dish that they haven’t had since their family was all together. With a lot of help from new friends at the Welcome Center Salma embarks upon becoming a Syrian Chef.
This is a sweet story that helps young readers see that the journey to a new place isn’t the only hard part about being a refugee. With Salma’s cheery attitude and determination this is sure to become a favorite book about overcoming hardships and helping others. This is truly one story not to be missed.
