September Girls Read/Guys Read

Did you know that we have two parent/child book clubs every month at the Provo City Library? They are for children ages 9-12 and a caregiver. This month, they will meet September 24 (girls) and September 26 (guys). Preregister under the Kids Corner/Program Registration tab on the library website. We have two great books to discuss this month:

Girls Read

All Raina really wants is to be a normal sixth grader, but unfortunately we don't always get what we want. In a random, freak accident Raina loses her front teeth spends the next several years undergoing various forms of orthodontia including braces, surgeries, false teeth, headgear, and implants. As if that weren't enough -- Raina also has to deal with boys, friends, and growing up. This popular graphic novel memoir was an instant classic for kids and librarians alike. We'll be reading SMILE just in time for Raina's visit this fall.

Guys Read

A Newbery winning novel in verse, The Crossover is the story of twin basketball prodigies Josh and JB Bell. The boys grew up in a close-knit family fueled by their former-pro dad's love of the game. The first challenge to Josh and JB's relationship comes when JB becomes interested in a girl and Josh finds himself without his brother for support. This dynamic and rhythmic story has a lot of heart and is perfect for sports fans and reluctant readers. Kwame Alexander will be visiting our library this September to promote the graphic novel adaptation of The Crossover.

Review: Alina in Her Roots

Alina in Her Roots Written by Shenaaz Nanji Illustrations by Beena Mistry Toronto, ON : Second Story Press, 2026. Intermediate. 91 pages. Alina is traveling by herself from her home in Canada to Nairobi, Kenya. But it's more than just a vacation to visit her favorite cousin Safi—Alina is on a secret mission to find her roots. Her family history started in India with her great-great-great-grandparents. Her parents were born in Kenya, then moved to Canada where she was born. She's heard stories about Kenya but wants to know where she fits in and to find what she is missing. Nairobi is a welcoming, vibrant, exciting place where so much feels so different. Alina writes journal entries to her Nani about her experiences, finding ways to make her own stories through matatu rides, trips to the market, a safari, and meals shared with new loved ones. This is a really well-written, cheerful and reassuring realistic fiction about the adventure of exploring different places and cultures.
