Are We There Yet?
By Dan Santat
Little, Brown and Company, 2016.
A boy and his parents are on their way to Grandma’s birthday party. However, as the boy discovers, it takes quite a while to get there. The boy can’t help but ask, “Are we there yet?” Soon the boy discovers that time and the journey are not quite as boring as they first appear—in fact everything is turned up-side-down (quite literally). Soon the trio meet pirates, knights, and dinosaurs (just to name a few). With such an epic journey, will they ever get to Grandma’s house? And once there…will the boy finally be content with enjoying the moment?
This is a fun read for those youngsters who have imaginations that often run wild. Santat’s illustrations are full of rich details that will take multiple readings in order to discover it all. And just perhaps, this book will distract some of young readers while taking their own lengthy road trips.
