This one is on a lot of "Best of 2009" lists . . . and rightly so. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is the beautifully written fantasy story of Minli, a young Chinese girl, who is determined to change her poor family's fortune. It is a tale of faith, love, and the importance of remembering to be thankful. Interspersed within Minli's adventure are short stories that other people and creatures share with her in order to explain some of the things Minli experiences. In the author's note at the end, Lin says she incorporated other Chinese fairy tales and folktales into this story. The end product is a wonderful children's book with dragons, monkeys, a raining moon, and a fierce green tiger. I won't tell you any more. Get this book and read it. You'll be glad you did!
