This book is about an eleven year old girl named Maud. Full of spice, spunk, and a more than healthy dose of naughtiness, she isn't exactly the model orphan. When she is chosen over more "proper" candidates to be adopted by a trio of old, well-to-do ladies, she is delighted to be rid of the orphanage and in a real home, even with the mandate that as such she must remain hidden as their "secret child." However, as her role in the old ladies' lives becomes increasingly complicated, she must make difficult choices which take her down new and unknown paths.

This book provides a very entertaining and enjoyable read. I found the plot to be very unique and interesting and the story immediately captured my attention. The characters are well developed and are one of the strongest points. I highly recommend this book--it's a great story!

This book has one of the best first lines I've ever read! Kids who like spooky books that are not too scary will love this one. It will also lead kids into reading more about this particular period of history.

Picture Book.  Vibes are "magical, invisible feelings and thoughts" that can pass from person to person. Through this book, you watch a child send and receive good vibes. It talks about how you can send vibes to anyone, even if you're not very close to them. The book warns to try to avoid sending bad vibes, because they'll make people feel sad. However, when you send good vibes, that happiness comes right back to you. Because you can't see vibes, it can be hard for children to understand the concept. This book beautifully explains what vibes are through words and pictures. I adored the illustrations and how they show that every person and mood gives off different kinds of energy. It's a great visual and important reminder that the energy we give out comes back to us.
