November Guys Read and Girls Read

Every month we have two book clubs for kids here at the Provo City Library! These book clubs are just for kids ages 9-12 and a caregiver. This month, our Guys Read book club will meet November 20 and our Girls Read book club will meet November 25. You can register now, using the library's online calendar!

Guys Read is reading:
By Jennifer L. Holm
New York: Random House, 2014. Fiction. 195 pages.

One day, 11-year-old Ellie's mother brings home Melvin. Ellie's curmudgeonly old grandfather, a scientist, who is looking a little different. Melvin has experienced success with his research lately -- finding the fountain of youth in a newly discovered species of jellyfish. The trick, Melvin is now 13-years-old! Ellie, who feels like she's lacking a passion in any one thing, is surprised to connect with her grandfather and the two bond over discussions about Jonas Salk, Robert Oppenheimer, and the ethics surrounding scientific discovery. This humorous and moral based novel will appeal to readers with an interest in science --but is lively and fun for all readers.

Girls Read is reading:
By Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
New York: Dial Books for Young Readers, 2015. Fiction. 316 pages.

Born with a clubfoot, Ada has grown up with a Mam who refused to treat her clubfoot and used her disability as an excuse to emotionally and verbally abuse her. Only her younger brother Jamie, who tells her about life outside their apartment, gives light to her life. But World War II is raging, and rumors that German bombs are headed for London means that Mam is sending Jamie to live in the English countryside as part of the children's evacuation of London. Ada, determined to join him, secretly teaches herself to walk so she can sneak out with him. The children are sent to Kent where they are reluctantly taken in by Susan, a reclusive single woman. In Susan's care, Ada and Jamie begin to thrive. This Newbery Honor novel is an emotional story of hope and healing.
