There are so many books that have been published this past year about rocks. (And if you missed previous post on great rock books, check this post out!) Here are five great picture books to read if you (like my family) like rocks. Happy reading!
By Lisa Varchol Perron and Taylor Perron
Illustrated by David Scheirer
New York: Rise x Penguin Workshop, an imprint of Penguin Random House LLC, 2024. Picture Book.
Any Rock-hounders will love reading this book. It is all about the various types of rocks that can be found (and what you can do with them: stack them, gather them, etc.). Each spread shows a different kind of rock and then shows where you might find that type of rock out in nature. Young rock collectors will enjoy seeing the various type of rocks and how they are important to so many people.
By Laurel Croza
Illustrated by Matt James
Toronto: Berkeley: Groundwood Books, House of Anansi Press, 2025. Picture Book.
In this story a somewhat mean seagull keeps telling a rock that the rock is not that important. In response the rock keeps declaring “I am a rock.” Readers who love to think about the importance of rocks or the importance of knowing who you are and not being afraid to tell others who you are will enjoy reading this story about this rock and how different perspectives show the rock’s worth.
By Drew Beckmeyer
New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2025. Picture Book.
Many young geologists may find themselves fascinated by caves—specifically how stalactites and stalagmites are formed. This book shows readers how these two rock formations are created (and eventually joined) over thousands of years. Readers who love facts and history along with a fun story about two quirky characters will enjoy reading this book.
By Kaye Umansky
Illustrated by Alice McKinley
Atlanta, GA: Peachtree Publishing Company Inc, 2023. Picture Book.
This is a somewhat snarky tale about two frogs who believe that a certain rock is theirs (and therefore the other frog should not be on the rock). With their arguments catching the attention of a hungry bird, the frogs are then forced to flee and find another rock (which they then happily share together). Readers who love rocks but also want a book about all the feelings that come when realizing that something they love doesn’t just belong to them will enjoy this read.
By Mary Lyn Ray
Illustrated by Felicita Sala
San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books LLC, 2024. Picture Book.
This book tells all about how important rocks are in various ways (from being part of big mountains to be the just-right size to hold in your hand). Readers who love to wonder about rocks, and pick some up to feel and collect will love reading about what to do when you find the right rock.
