If you have a preschooler, you may already know that understanding opposites is one of the best ways for little learners to show off their critical thinking skills. Talking about and pointing out opposites is excellent for children developing the ability to describe things. And, reading books about opposites is a perfect way for preschoolers to practice this skill!

This series of concept-based board books inspired by Brendan Wenzel's Caldecott Honor picture book series is one of my personal favorites. The illustrations are fun and do a good job of visually representing the differences in opposite animals.

After a tree falls in the forest, all of the woodland animals come to investigate. The result is a picture book that little readers will want to read over and over. From showing lots of forest creatures in their habitat, this book also introduces 14 different opposite pairs with pictures to help match to words.

Rhyming passages and adorably handknit illustrations introduce young readers to a world filled with opposites. Some opposites in this book are more basic -- like hot and cold, or long and short -- but some are a little less common like foolish and clever. The high contrast illustrations make for a book perfect to read to a crowd.

The very definition of an oldie, but a goodie. Though this picture book may not be the flashiest picture book, it is still one of my very favorite concept books to talk about opposites. Labeled photographs of a brother and sister going about their day shows off the opposites around us. This book is excellent for preschoolers and invites the reader to start looking for their own opposites throughout the day.

This child-directed picture book shows a family on an outing to explore a city. Beautiful illustrations fill every page and readers will be eager to study each page to pick out all the details. All along their daytime adventure they encounter opposites in a story that takes readers from morning to night. Lovely, and perfect bedtime reading.
