Review: Eliza and the Flower Fairies

Eliza is keeping a magical secret, in her bedroom is a door that leads to the Land of UnderStair -- her secret hideout. With help from a pinch of fairy dust, Eliza is transported from the Land of UnderStair into the world of flower fairies. A place where every flower has a fairy and new flowers grow whenever one is picked. Eliza is so enchanted by the fairy world that she accidentally wanders too far beyond the hedgerow and encounters two evil flower fairies who release a dangerous curse. It's up to Eliza to save the flowers and their fairies before it is too late!

This is a perfectly charming chapter book just right for emerging readers. Full-color gouache illustrations abound and fill the pages with lush flora and plenty of magical fairies. Eliza's story ends with an opening for many, many sequels and readers will be clamoring for more imaginative adventures.

In 1815 on a small island in Indonesia, Mount Tambora erupted. The blast was the largest in human history, and one of the deadliest. Though it couldn't be understood at the time, the deadly blast half a world away would lead to catastrophic famine in Europe, prompt westward expansion in America, and inspire the novel Frankenstein  by Mary Shelley. The global climate disaster following the explosion also led to inventions like modern meteorology and the early invention of the bicycle. The people living at the time couldn't have seen how everything was connected, but this fast paced narrative assures that readers will.
