The Problem with Not Being Scared of Kids
by Dan Richards
Illustrated by Robert Neubecker
Boyds Mills Press, 2015. Picture Book
Here is a sequel to last year's hit picture book, The Problem with Not Being Afraid of Monsters. In this one the monsters are not afraid of the children, but for some reason, the children are afraid of the monsters. This causes some problems. The poor monsters don't have anyone to play with or a friend with whom they can sit on the school bus. They are the main targets in snow ball fights, and Halloween is down right embarrassing. Is there any hope? Luckily one brave child is willing to look past appearances to make a new friend. This is a new not-so-scary book just right for October. Richard's text is a great length for reading aloud to a group and Neubecker's illustrations are colorful and entertaining. The message about accepting differences is valuable, but subtle enough that is doesn't get in way of the fun.
