My Amazing Body Machine
By Robert Winston
Illustrated by Owen Gildersleeve
Dorling Kindersley, 2017. Informational.

There is a reason why kids, parents, and librarians flip over a new DK Publishing book - they really are that much better than many of their non-fiction counter parts. DK books are so good that one of our teen librarians recently posted to the Library Blog about how good they are. This new addition is a bright, colorful, interesting introduction to the human body and how it works. The text is simple and broken down to help readers of all ages learn a little more about how their body works.

What makes this book stand out from so many other children's books about the human body are the incredible illustrations. Owen Gildersleeve is a London based artist who specializes in handcrafted illustrations, this is the first book for children that he's illustrated, but I'm hoping for many, many more! The incredibly delicate cut paper illustrations are bright, simple, and graphically pleasing. This is a great book for browsing for both adults and children.

Alina is traveling by herself from her home in Canada to Nairobi, Kenya. But it's more than just a vacation to visit her favorite cousin Safi—Alina is on a secret mission to find her roots. Her family history started in India with her great-great-great-grandparents. Her parents were born in Kenya, then moved to Canada where she was born. She's heard stories about Kenya but wants to know where she fits in and to find what she is missing. Nairobi is a welcoming, vibrant, exciting place where so much feels so different. Alina writes journal entries to her Nani about her experiences, finding ways to make her own stories through matatu rides, trips to the market, a safari, and meals shared with new loved ones.
