From Story Time: Colors!

Read in Book Babies

By Emily Gravett
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2016.  Picture Book.

Pete the Badger likes everything "just so."  He tidies and tidies all over the forest until everything is clean as can be.  But then when autumn comes...a leaf falls.  Well in fall, lots of leaves fall!  Pete's tidying reaches outrageous proportions, with some unexpected consequences for himself and his forest friends.  Luckily Pete is a responsible forest dweller, and he and his friends work hard to set things right.  Gravett's classic illustrations and rhyming text create an engaging read aloud that encourages responsible environmental behavior.  And honestly, the layered cut-out cover is to die for!

Vincent (yes, that Vincent) is ready to paint his house.  But when he chooses a color and starts to paint, he's stopped by the spider who claims it's HIS house, and that he wants a different color.  This happens over and over with different creatures, producing an end result that makes everyone happy!  A fitting homage to the great Van Gogh, this book will introduce some fantastically fun color names via Vincent's painterly palette.

Pete the Cat loves his white shoes!  But they don't stay white for long when he steps in colorful things like fruit and mud as he's singing and walking down the street.  But Pete's a cool cat and doesn't let anything ruin his day.  He just keeps "walking along and singing his song."  This is a fun little book that reinforces colors and adds a great reminder to not sweat the small stuff.

Review: The Teeny-Weeny Unicorn

The Teeny-Weeny Unicorn By Shawn Harris New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2024. Picture book. Do not be fooled into thinking this is like other unicorn books you have read, this one is much better. The teeny-weeny unicorn is truly teeny-weeny -- far and away the smallest member of his unicorn family. His older (much bigger) siblings, Fancy Annie and Prince Butterscotch, pick on him constantly. They use him as a pawn when they play chess, they refuse to let him jump into their castle's moat, and they warn him he'll get lost in the lawn. Fed up with being picked on, he runs away and does, indeed, get lost in the lawn. He quickly learns about perspective when an even teenier-weenier gnome chastises the teeny-weeny unicorn for stepping on and crushing his car. Eager to make this right, and also a little proud of his size, the unicorn and gnome gallop back to the castle to make amends. In the end, the teeny-weeny unicorn stands a little bit taller with his new perspective. A wholly origina
