From Story Time: The Letter "P"

Read in Book Babies

By Taro Gomi
Chronicle Books, 2016.  Picture Book.

In this quiet book of wonder, a child stands at ocean's edge and contemplates what might be on the other side.  From big farms to tall buildings, other kids, and beautiful stars, the possibilities are abundant.  Deep, rich colors and simple lines create perfectly detailed, yet uncomplicated, illustrations.  A wonderful pick to inspire imaginative thought.

"Princess Smartypants did not want to get married.  She enjoyed being a Ms."  She loved her castle, her pets, and her motorbike.  But all of the princes (and her parents) had other ideas.  The princess agreed to allow her suitors to win her hand in marriage, but none of them could complete the tasks she gave them...that is, until Prince Swashbuckle arrived.  He may have won the magic kiss, but he also got more than he bargained for!

HarperCollins, 1998.  Picture Book.

Pete is not happy.  He wants to play outside with his friends, but it's raining.  So Pete's dad decides to make him into a pizza!  He kneads him, stretches him, and adds oil (water), flour (powder), tomatoes (checkers), and cheese (pieces of paper).  A fun game played by parents and child chases away the grumpies and passes the time until the sun is shining again.  This is a fun for kids who enjoy silly books and love to laugh!

Pigeon is filthy.  Pigeon is so dirty that even the flies tell him to take a bath.  Well Pigeon just can't get that tub the way he wants it, what with all the hot and cold water, and toys, and such. Oh, but once he's in, he loves it!  A great read for little ones who are hesitant to bathe (or are stubbornly refusing!).  Willems' humor and artistic talent shine yet again.

Review: A World Without Summer

A World Without Summer: A Volcano Erupts, a Creature Awakens, and the Sun Goes Out Written by Nicholas Day Illustrated by Yas Imamura New York: Random House Studio, 2025. Informational. 294 pages. In 1815 on a small island in Indonesia, Mount Tambora erupted. The blast was the largest in human history, and one of the deadliest. Though it couldn't be understood at the time, the deadly blast half a world away would lead to catastrophic famine in Europe, prompt westward expansion in America, and inspire the novel Frankenstein  by Mary Shelley. The global climate disaster following the explosion also led to inventions like modern meteorology and the early invention of the bicycle. The people living at the time couldn't have seen how everything was connected, but this fast paced narrative assures that readers will. As he did in 2024's Sibert winner The Mona Lisa Vanishes, Nicholas Day does an impressive job of weaving together different historical events into one single, compell...
