I’m a Girl!
By Yasmeen Ismail
Bloomsbury, 2016. Picture Book
A young girl, portrayed as a blue donkey, is loud and rambunctious, which leads those around her to mistake her for a boy; the girl gets upset and proudly proclaims each time that she is a girl! It doesn’t matter that she likes to do things that boys are supposed to like; she likes them, too, and can still be a girl. At times it seems that the author is portraying stereotypes in order to break stereotypes but the end message is to be true to yourself because there is no one better. The colorful illustrations and repetitive statement of “I’m a girl” will appeal to young readers.
