A Hungry Lion, or, a Dwindling Assortment of Animals
By Lucy Ruth Cummins
Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2016
In this snarky picture book there is a large group of animals (a lion, penguin, turtle, kitten, mouse, frog, bat, sheep, koala, hen, two bunnies, and two pigs). Randomly these animals all start disappearing. Readers will suspect that the hungry lion has something to do with it—and he does, just not in the way kids expect (at least to begin with). Youngsters who love the idea of an animal chain and predators and a little unexpected surprise will enjoy this book. As will the adults who will be sure to read this tale multiple times to little ones; although, the audible chuckle will be loudest with the first reading.
