I Will Never Get a Star on Mrs. Benson’s Blackboard
By Jennifer K. Mann
Candlewick, 2015. Picture Book
Rose wants to achieve a star on the blackboard like other kids in Mrs. Benson’s classroom, but feels that she never will. Stars are for neatness, spelling and saying the right answer, and Rose has trouble always staying focused. One afternoon an artist visits the classroom. He shows the class his artwork and talks about being an artist. The class is asked to make thank-you cards for the artist. Will Rose earn a star for her thank-you card?
This book is very true to life for the feelings some children get at never being good enough. Rose is a lovable character and the reader will cheer her on. Children who have talents outside of reading and math will identify with Rose in this empowering story.
