Review: The Undead Fox of Deadwood Forest

The Undead Fox of Deadwood Forest  Written by Aubrey Hartman  Illustrations by Marcin Minor  New York: Little, Brown and Company, 2025. 313 pages.  Clare is the undead fox of Deadwood Forest. Which basically means he is a dead fox who is actually alive and works as an Usher (the animal that helps the other dead animals cross into the Afterlife). Due to the fact that Clare was hit by a car as he died, Clare looks horrific. In fact, Clare looks like a monster. Which is perhaps why so many humans fear the “monster” of deadwood forest and tend to sing horrible chants about him on Halloween.  One day as Clare is going about his life, a badger named Gingersnipes comes looking for which way to go to the Afterlife (there are four directions: Peace, Progress, Pleasure, and Pain). Only, Gingersnipes tries to go to all of the various and ends up right back on Clare’s doorstep. In search of answers, Claire heads to Hesterfowl (a bird who has visions of the future) to...

Nearly Exactly Almost Like Me Written by Jennifer Bradbury Illustrated by Pearl AuYeung New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2025. Picture Book. When an ice cream truck stops in the park, two brothers rush to get in line. It turns out that "no cuts" boy doesn't believe they're brothers due to their lack of family resemblance. However, the big brother insists that his adopted younger brother is "nearly, exactly, almost like me." He then goes on to describe the various traits he and his little brother share, such as both loving their trampoline or how they both ate way too much candy on Valentine's Day and threw up on the rug. Through highlighting their similarities, we get the story of how both boys came to be with their family. Their parents first met each of them "through a picture," a sonogram or ph...

Review: Spooky Lakes

Spooky Lakes: 25 Strange and Mysterious Lakes That Dot Our Planet By Geo Rutherford New York: Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2024. Informational. 96 pages. Have you ever heard of a lake so salty that its waters mummify any creature that touches it?  How about a a lake that perfectly preserved the crew of a sunken Canadian ship, with one crew member being nicknamed "Old Whitey" eternally floating in the engine room?  From the macabre to the astounding, Spooky Lakes tells the tale of twenty-five of Earth's most intriguing lakes.   This book is one of my favorites from 2024.  It was wildly entertaining and informative and I couldn't wait to read about each new lake presented.  I kept stopping to reread particularly crazy parts out loud to my kids so they, too, could be amazed!  It also made me add a couple new locations to my travel bucket list and also cross some locations off.  I highly recommend this fast paced, high-interest informational book ...

Five Faves: Hot Topics

In the Children's Department, we have an amazing section of picture books that we call our Hot Topics section. In this section, we group the picture books by a specific topic. A few examples of these topics are: superheroes, princesses, seek & find, favorite characters, and alphabet books. If you haven't had time to explore this section yet, I highly recommend it! It's a great way to easily find books on topics that are very popular. This blog post will feature five of my favorites from this section. A is for Bee By Ellen Heck Montclair, NJ: Levine Querido, 2022. Picture Book. I found this book fascinating. It goes through each letter of the English alphabet and features a drawing of an animal. Then it lists what the word is for that animal in other languages. It was so interesting to me to see how often in multiple other languages, the first letter is the same, but in English it is totally different. The example on the cover: ari, aamoo, abelha are some of the words fo...
