The Girl with the Parrot on Her Head
by Daisy Hirst
Candlewick Press. 2015. Picture Book.
Isabel is a precocious little girl who plays all day, accompanied by her best friend Simon and a parrot who lives on her head. When Simon moves away, Isabel is devastated. She begins to pack away her imaginative things and learns to play on her own -- until her imagined creations get out of hand.
This book delicately navigates a child's relationship with loss and change, and the way things can often not make sense to a youngster. Rather than lead her story to a simple, tidy ending, Hirst reaches for a more thoughtful conclusion. Isabel learns that, in the wake of her loss, she can make it on her own and be happy, but she doesn't have to be, and she moves on from her experience better for it.
