Learning to read is a challenge and finding fun books that encourage and help beginning readers want to continue reading is also a challenge. This is why I love the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. This award is given to books that encourage and support the beginning reader. Here is a list of my five favorite Geisel award winning books that always put a smile on my face and remind me why I love reading.

This book made me laugh several times. Max the dog is mistaken for a cat and he can't seem to convince the book that he is not a cat but a dog. So begins three stories about Max the dog, not the cat, told in simple repetitive text with lots of sight words and word recognition. Three lively and humorous stories that young readers will love.

Mischievous Fox wishes he were a tiger because tigers are big, fast and sneaky. He decides to be a tiger and paints black stripes on himself and "goes for a prowl". Soon Fox's friends see what he is doing and they decide to pretend as well. Everyone is having a good time until the rain comes and washes away all of their disguises. I love this book because it teaches a great lesson about loving yourself for who you are with entertaining and readable text that will capture young readers attention.

Ty cannot wait to ride his new scooter but when he wobbles and can't zip and zoom like the other kids he wants to give up. Then he meets a new friend and she teaches him to give it another try and they zoom along together. I love this book series because it is all about childhood imagination and going on pretend adventures with friends. These active and entertaining stories with lovable characters encourage young ones to continue reading.

Adorable tiger is big and tough and is not afraid of anything, except worms. He thinks worms are slimy and wiggly and soon all he can think about are worms. They are everywhere, even in the things he loves, like his flowers, apple, and book. Tiger overreacts and drops everything as he runs away from the worms, who can't believe anyone would be afraid of them, because the scariest thing alive is a furry non-crawling tiger! Readers will love this humorous story with it's repetitive text, exclamations and fun sound effects.
